Iowa Sheriff

How much does a police officer/sheriff get paid?

I am thinking about being sheriff and I was wondering if anyone knows what they make for a fact. I make about 28k a year now doing practically nothing, but I am looking for something more exciting. And I would like a little more money. Does anyone know for sure?

  1. It depends on what state/city you want to work for because they all have a different pay system, but I know Las Vegas tries to have the highest payed officers so if you are looking for the best pay then Vegas would be the place to go. If you post on here where you are looking to become an officer then I'll try to check it out on Google for you.
  2. It is department specific. You have to contact your local agencies of interest. Also with some agencies they have incentive pay: Incentive pay can cover night shift personnel( not all agencies pay this); college degrees(some agencies pay $100 for associates, $200 for bachelors, $300 for master's this different agency to agency); also look in special duty assignment such as detective, narcotics, traffic, gangs. Again, this is all subjective to your department and its budget. These figures are not solid and solely go by Agency to Agency. My department gives you money on top of your salary for more training and also pays for my college courses. Your Agency will depend on the income of your county, the smaller or less income the less you make.
  3. That depends if he's honest or corrupt.
  4. If your getting into the job just cause you think it will be exciting and make some more money then this might be the wrong career choice. Being a Police Officer is a lifestyle. But it depends on location.
  5. According to the US Department of Labor, the average salary for law enforcement in the US is about $52,810.00 http://www.bls.gov/oes/2008/may/oes333051.htm Of course that will vary depending on where you work and how long you've been on the job, but there is statistics for several geographic areas if you search a bit on the link above.
  6. It depends on the city and state, cost of living, etc. I'll make $82,000 this year (Ohio).
  7. This applies to my research in the state of Georgia Georgia average pay for city cops is approx. $18.50 per hr/ Break it down on my personal experience. City cop in Albany Ga. ( southwest Ga.) entry level approx 32 K a year. Deputy Sheriff ( southwest Ga.) between $10.00 and 13.50 an hour for entry level. ( 27K) In other words , if you need money , this is not for you. ( That is in the south.) The south has lower educational standards than most other states. This needs to change. Pay needs to change. I am a single mom of 2. I stay broke but my passion cannot be filled by any other adventure.
  8. That depends on what area you live in.At my department, probationary officers start off making 34k a year and Captains make 53k a year.So it's not the best, but it's definitely not bad either. Now larger cities such as NYC,Miami,Vegas, etc obviously get paid more.So it just depends on the department you work for.
  9. Don't known, but many are not bothered with the salary, it's what they 'make'
