  1. How did this get to be an emergency? Plus, it is not a genealogy question. This might help http://www.iowa.gov/Facts_About_Iowa
  2. If you don't find the answers in the link above, here's another. It lists each county and tells (among other things) what the county was named for: http://iagenweb.org/history/hoi3/counties.htm Here's a start: Adair - named for General John Adair a distinguished officer of the War of 1812 Adams - named for John Adams, second President of the United States. Allamakee - The name is of Indian origin says Fulton in his "Red Men of Iowa"; while other authorities claim that it took its name from "Allen Makee" a famous Indian trader and trapper Appanoose - named for a noted chief of the Sac and Fox Indians. Audubon - named for John J. Audubon the naturalist
  3. Have you tried your library? Kane, Joseph Nathan. 1983. The American Counties: Origins of County Names, Dates of Creation and Organization, ....... Scarecrow Press, Inc., Metuchen, NJ.
  4. well i'd assume by what others said some are named after people, but around where i live in Iowa, like Potawattomi (sp??) county and others are Native American
