If the Sheriff takes physical evidence from someone reporting a crime, what is he supposed to do with it?

My neighbor called the Sheriff and told him that she had been stalked. She gave him the name of the person she said stalked her and filed a report. She told the Deputy that this person left personal items (pictures, etc.) on her driveway and turned them in as evidence. My question is "Isn't the Sheriff supposed to notify the person charged with this crime and tell them that their belongings are at the Sheriff's Department? I KNOW this person and I am sure she has not been contacted.

1. Um no the cops dont alert a possible criminal their being investigated...........the sheriff puts the evidence in a lock up and noone can get to it without permission, its part of an investigation now. You can actually get in trouble if you alert the criminal and things progress worse, you will become part of the criminal activity.
