What are the reasons that a Deputy Sheriff can be put on leave of absence without pay?

What are the reasons that a Deputy Sheriff can be put on leave of absence without pay? Do these vary by state or county? How about in Ohio? Are they for serious or criminal offenses? What does it mean by ‘sheriff commission was cancelled’ or ‘oath of office has been cancelled’? Could they be called back to duty afterwards? Thank you!
