What is the significance of street numbers in the country? I'm from Iowa and they have to do with coordinates?

example: mines 1141, something about so many miles from the county line and the house so many feet from the road?

1. Some places adopt a numbering system based upon a nearby city, well, not really nearby. Could be 20 or more miles away. As an example, all the areas around Portland, Oregon, use street and house numbers based upon Portland. It's not unusual to see a house number in the 200000 range or street in the 200s.
