Does the Bexar County Sheriff's office promote detention officers to partol officers after 2 years?

The Bexar County web site says that anyone looking to become a patrol officer must first spend two years in the detention center as a corrections officer. Do promotions from detention to patrol happen regularly after 2 years? Or is this one of those deals where I'd have to spend at least 5 or 6 years trying to infiltrate the good ol' boys club in hopes of getting out on patrol?

  1. It just means that you you can't go directly to patrol. You have to do at least two years in the jail. It does not promise that you WILL get to patrol, after two years or ever. That depends on your performance and fitness. Lots of people do get to move from the jail. Lots don't. It's not a matter of good ole boys. It just a matter of (1) are you someone they want on the street and (2) do they have openings in patrol. Also, of course, how many others are in line to move out of the jail. If you're worthwhile and seen as suited to the job, you will eventually make it, but do not imagine that on your 731st day you'll report to patrol.
